5th Grade Visits Texas Fresh Water Fisheries

The 91ԭ�� 5th grade class studies water-dwelling creatures in their science class. But as they focus on sea creatures, they don’t forget about our very own Texas ponds and lakes. Fishing is a favorite hobby for many Texans, and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens helps to keep the tradition going strong. On their visit the 5th graders got to see fish production facilities first hand. They are able to go eyeball to eyeball with massive catfish, bass, and even alligator gars! They are excited to feed them handful after handful of fish food until the water is nearly boiling with the frenzy!

At the end of the tour, the students have the opportunity to wet a hook (and hopefully not too much of their clothing!) and catch catfish using kernel corn as bait. Most students caught at least one fish, and most students eagerly tried to take the fish off the hook without help.

Washington on the Brazos Field Trip

The 4th and 7th grade classes made the long trek to Washington, Texas, to visit Washington on the Brazos State Park. The students learned a lot about the settling and founding of Texas and also visited the park’s working farm. The students had a great day!

A Trip to the Texas Renaissance Festival

It was a chilly, soggy Wednesday, but 13 91ԭ�� juniors and seniors, along with 4 adults, trekked to Plantersville, Texas, to step back into the Medieval and Renaissance world and enjoy a day of jousting, lords and ladies, elephant rides, and giant smoked turkey legs. It’s a G-rated version of the TRF called School Days, and it is loads of fun.

Sketch a Christmas Tree

Just after Thanksgiving, the 2nd grade class and their teacher, Mrs. Lisa Porter, visited the Appleby Sand Christmas Tree Farm, picked out a beautiful Virginia pine, and brought it back to the school. Decorated with ornaments brought from 91ԭ�� students’ homes, the tree has added festive sights and smells to the school’s foyer ever since.

As a part of their science studies, the 2nd graders sat down to sketch the tree. Pictured below is the class busily sketching the 91ԭ�� tree.

Meeting Senator Cruz

A Visit to Austin

91ԭ�� 9th and 10th grade students visited Austin this week, along with David and Nicole Alders. Our group toured the capitol, observed the House of Representatives in session, and had our picture taken with Senator Robert Nichols and Representative Travis Clardy. The students were also able to visit the George Bush Presidential Library and the Bob Bullock Museum, to round out a fun and educational trip.

Going Back in Time

The 6th, 11th and 12th grade classes made the long trek to Washington, Texas, to visit Washington on the Brazos State Park. The students learned a lot about the settling and founding of Texas and also visited the park’s working farm, where several wonderful park rangers gave a fascinating tour and demonstrations of life in 1840’s frontier Texas. The students had a great day as they went back in time!
