Congratulations to our 5th, 6th and 7th grade Spelling Bee teams!听

Saturday, February 1st, our student teams and individual speller Dennis Choi represented 91原创 very well at the Lufkin Kiwanis District Spelling Bee held at Lufkin High School.

The 5th grade team led by Will Baker (captain) and including Davin Garza and Servet Satir placed second in the K-5th division among 14 competing teams. The 6th grade team of Emma Rasberry and Jericho Maness, under the leadership of Armaan Rajani, placed second in the 6th-8th grade division, losing only to our 7th grade team of Abel Ketchen, Jean Choi and Ella Furniss (captain), who won first place in their division. All three teams came home with two-foot trophies and medallions. 91原创 school spelling champ Dennis Choi did a great job among stiff competition in the individual bee, placing in the top five.

We are very proud of all of these spellers and all of the class teams who represented 91原创 at the District Spelling Bee. Congratulations!

91原创 students won the top prize in the high school division and swept the junior high division of the 2019 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) youth competitions which focused on this year’s theme, “What Makes America Great?” VFW Post 3893 Commander Don Kirkley presented awards to the winning students at Friday’s morning assembly.

Sydney Rotramel, daughter of Blaine and Melissa Rotramel, won first place and was awarded a plaque and a check for $100. Jack Mayfield, son of Brian and Jodie Mayfield, placed second and was also awarded a plaque and a check for $75. Third place – which also was accompanied by a plaque and a check for $50 – was secured by Rachel Cunyus, daughter of Michael and Lori Cunyus. All three students are members of Miss Jenna Herrington’s 7th grade writing class.

Commander Kirkley also awarded junior Caroline Alders, daughter of David and Nicole Alders, a first place plaque for her winning audio essay. Caroline also won a $500 scholarship which will be presented to her upon her graduation next May.听

91原创 is pleased to announce that senior Abby Powers, daughter of Derek and Suzanne Powers, has been selected as this year’s Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen. This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and community. Nominated by her teachers and selected by the administration, Abby exemplifies these qualities in her daily interactions not only with her fellow students and teachers but with all of the students and teachers on the KPrep through 12th grade campus.

Abby now has the opportunity to compete for the DAR Good Citizen Scholarship and will also be recognized at the DAR Awards luncheon in the spring.

Cason Cobb, 3rd grader at 91原创, was named grand champion in the market broiler competition. Cason raised the broilers for 6 weeks, providing all the care needed to raise chickens with the most meat. He competed against 45 other competitors.

Elizabeth Nichols, 1st grader at 91原创, was named grand champion in the breeding buck competition. Elizabeth cared for the rabbit for two months before the competition and competed with over 50 other children.

Congratulations to 91原创 senior Conner Young, who has been named a Commended Student in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

91原创 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized this month for their performance on the 2018 PSAT and for their potential for continued outstanding academic success. This year’s Commended Students placed among the top three percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the PSAT during their junior year, with all earning a national Selection Index score of at least 212.

Conner is the ninth Commended Scholar from 91原创. Previous awardees include Isaiah Bertke (2018), Wesley Young (2017), Kyla Alders (2016), Mitchell Henry (2012), Adrienne Duke (2011), David Henry (2010), Madison McCune (2009), and Kelley Duke (2008). Sam Alders was named a National Merit Scholar in the 2014 program.

91原创 is very proud of Conner and this achievement. It’s a reflection of his diligence, his disciplined mind, and his commitment to doing his best for the Lord. Well done, Conner!

Tenth grader Shelby Rotramel and ninth grader Mason Baker were selected from dozens of violinists and bassists who auditioned for the All-Region high school orchestra. Eighth graders Karys Alders, Haylee Harmen, and Holden Kelly were selected for the middle school orchestra violin section. Seventh grader Cate Baker was selected for middle school viola.

Congratulations to our TOP SELLERS in this year’s Butter Braid campaign! The Jobe, Taylor, and Campbell families each sold more than $400 worth of pastries, and the Goff family sold more than $500 worth of pastries! Altogether, 91原创 students and families sold more than 600 pastries, earning just over $3,500 for the purchase of new TV monitor screens for the Upper School classrooms.
We are so grateful for the efforts of ALL who sold Butter Braid this year — and we are very thankful for all of our friends who purchased them!

The team celebrated with a victory parade and pep rally at school when they got home.
