As a teacher at a classical Christian school, my faith strongly shapes the way that I teach and the culture of my classroom. Modeling a Christ-like example for my students is of utmost importance, and will allow me to then cultivate a love for learning in my classroom. Through every subject that I teach, it is my goal that students will be captivated by the wonder of our Creator and His truth, beauty, and goodness that are abundantly evident in our learning each day.聽

Elizabeth Spradley, Ph.D., teaches Rhetoric II, also known as senior thesis, at 91原创. Her educational background includes a BA in Speech Communication with a double major in Radio/TV and a MA in Communication from Stephen F. Austin State University and a doctoral degree in Communication from Texas A&M University. Recently she has been awarded for her research 鈥 an article of the year for a co-authored study published in Journal of Communication Pedagogy and a research excellence award at Stephen F. Austin State University. She and Dr. R. Tyler Spradley were married in 2002 and have four boys 鈥 Micah, Ethan, Daniel, and Joshua. While appreciative and intrigued by classical Christian education for decades, the Spradley family was led to make the classical Christian shift in 2020. This shift was fueled by the unwavering belief that education should partner with families to pursue the True, good, and beautiful for the glory of God in the developing lives of young people. As a family, the Spradley family loves to laugh, watch old movies and TV shows, enjoy nature, travel, and study God鈥檚 Word. One of their favorite traditions is the annual engraving of a silver bell and cross for their Christmas tree. One of the bells is adorned with their family motto, 鈥淪truggle well for His glory.鈥

Mrs. Emily McLemore teaches 10th Grade Omnibus IV (Antiquity II) and 7th-12th Grade Drama in the upper school, while also serving as Head of House for Oxford and overseeing social media marketing for 91原创. An alumna of Stephen F. Austin State University, she has a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology with a minor in Spanish. Within her fields of study, she has special interest in archaeology, linguistics, and mythology. Guiding her students to find the history in mythology, the mythology in history, and the gospel in the pagan, she seeks to deepen our culture鈥檚 collective understanding of the human condition in the light of Christ. Each year, she hopes that her students鈥 coursework reminds them that within man is implanted a desire for something bigger than himself – for the objectively Good, the objectively True, and the objectively Beautiful – just as it does for her.

He then earned his Ph.D. (鈥10) in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Southern Methodist University. For five years, he taught mathematics at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX, where he earned the Holland Award of Excellence, which is given annually to a single faculty member in the Holland School of Sciences and Mathematics. Since 2015, he has taught several courses as part of the Mathematics and Statistics Department at SFA. Jonathan is married (鈥07) to his spouse, Katy Mitchell (Little Kids Director at Grace Bible Church), and they have three children: Luke (鈥09), Parker (鈥11), and Reese (鈥16). For fun, Jonathan enjoys reading and playing basketball and board games with his family.

In class, there is the freedom to pray as a class, share real-life connections to the content, and go after the heart of an issue or question. Every math question involves assumed premises鈥 just like real-life questions. My hope is to get students to strive for 鈥渨hy does that work鈥 instead of merely 鈥渨hat鈥檚 the answer鈥. Oh yeah, and to ensure students learn calculus.聽

All truth is God鈥檚, including mathematical truth, and it beautifully fits together in ways one must dive into in order to fully appreciate it.

Lara Sowell teaches Latin III and IV in the Logic & Rhetoric Schools. She attended Texas Wesleyan University for one semester and then transferred to University of Texas at Arlington where she studied German and Mathematics. As a Christian, Lara knows every person has been created with the 鈥榠mago Dei鈥 (image of God) and has the innate ability to learn. This inherent value placed on each person dictates her classroom culture in the way people treat each other. God has endless patience with people and repeats the lessons He is teaching them until they finally get them. God is the model Teacher she aims to be. All languages are created by God and reflect His order (truth,) logic (goodness,) and rhetoric (beauty.)聽

Lara met her husband, Mark, while working as a pharmacy technician at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Worth. They married in 1992 and Lara joined Mark in Cleveland, OH, where he was attending medical school. They are immensely proud of their four children, Camille, Tyler, Jonathan, and Andria. In 1994 the couple became interested in classical Christian education.

After settling in Nacogdoches in July 1999, Mark and Lara met like-minded people, and started planning 91原创 in the fall of 2001 and opened 91原创 to students in the fall of 2002. Lara agreed to teach Latin at the school even though she had only taught introductory Latin in a home school setting. Over the years she taught herself Latin and has been teaching Latin every year since the school opened. Lara enjoys going for walks, hanging out with friends, and listening to audio books. Lara serves locally on the Nacogdoches Mayor鈥檚 Committee on People with Disabilities.聽 She is also president of the NFB National Organization of Blind Educators, treasurer of the National Federation of the Blind of Texas, president of the NFBTX Lone Star Chapter, and chairs the NFBTX Scholarship Committee.
